TAIPEI -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is accelerating efforts to shift production of chips short of the cutting edge off the island with plans to start building a second factory in Japan later this year.

TSMC's second hub in Kumamoto prefecture is slated to come online by the end of 2027. The plant will produce 6-nanometer chips, the most advanced semiconductors to be made in Japan.
