TSMC's second Japan plant advances Tokyo ambitions on chip supply

Big subsidies, lower costs provide edge in race to reshape global supply chains

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. controls over half the global foundry market and is a key player in cutting-edge chips as well. (TSMC)

TAIPEI -- Japan's efforts to lure global chipmakers are bearing fruit as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announces plans to construct a second plant in the country, drawn by generous subsidies and cheaper costs compared with the U.S. and Europe.

The planned factory in Kumamoto prefecture announced Tuesday will produce 6-nanometer chips, the most advanced semiconductors to be made in Japan. Investments in the new plant are expected to surpass those for TSMC's first in Kumamoto.
